How Can You Use The Slight Edge To Succeed

I was recently privileged to listen to the audio book version of Jeff Olson’s best-selling book entitled, “The Slight Edge”.

In this post I will share the major principle of success that I learned and how I’m applying this principle in one area of my life to get amazing results. I will aim to answer the question; what is the slight edge and how can using it bring me success?

What Is The Slight Edge All About

the slight edgeAs the title of the book suggests, there is only a “slight” difference between those who achieve mediocre results in life and those who manage to become incredibly successful. Hence the term, “slight edge.”

We live in a society that thrives on quick fixes, fast food, instant coffee, diet pills etc. Our minds have been conditioned to believe that success is acquired in this manner.

Success is defined as the progressive realization of a worthy goal. “Progressive” is the operative word and suggests a gradual process of consistent progress.

Successful people understand that it is actually very simple disciplines that when applied on a consistent basis, leads one to achieve outstanding results in life.

Take for instance the area of fitness. If one wishes to get in shape and stay in shape, all that one needs to do is 15 minutes of aerobics exercises 4-5 days a week.

How many people that want to get in shape and stay that way will actually do this? Is 15 minutes of aerobics exercise 4-5 days a week easy to do? Yes. Is it easy not to do? Yes.

It’s easy not to do because if for instance you begin this 15 minutes a day exercise program and a week from now, or even a month from now take a look at yourself in the mirror, you might not see any changes.

You may even compare yourself to your friend who couldn’t be bothered about getting in shape and after a month of exercising you may not be much different to them. If you stopped exercising at this point you would not realize the benefits of having a body that is in good shape.

But if you continued to exercise just 15 minutes each day, perhaps after 3 months you might begin to not only feel but also notice the positive changes within your body and all the benefits that go with it. Over 6 months to a year the difference between you and your friend will be dramatic.

How I Used The Slight Edge To Achieve A Fitness Goal

I was intrigued by this principle. It shifted my paradigm in how I thought about accumulating wealth or achieving success in any discipline. So I went on to apply the principle in the area of fitness.

I’ve always had a goal to do 100 push ups continually without a break so I’ve applied the principle of the “slight edge” to get there.

I began by doing as many push ups as I could in one go and ended up on 60 push ups. Here is where the “slight edge” principle came in.

I resolved to do 1 extra push up every day from 60. It took me just over 40 days to achieve my goal of 100 push ups and I went on to do 135 push ups nonstop. Pretty impressive hey! That was by just doing 1 extra push up each day. Was it easy to do? Yes. Could it have been easy not to do? Yes.

Isn’t that amazing? So now I figure if the principle works in one area of my life it ought to work in other areas such as business, finance, marriage, parenthood, your online business etc. Just make incremental improvements each day consistently and over the coming months and years the results will be spectacular.

Similarly, starting an online business may seem like a major hurdle if you are focused on the end result instead of the small steps that are necessary to create a sustainable income online.

By using the slight edge principles you will realize that in order to succeed you only need to focus on the small daily actions instead of big dramatic steps.

You will develop the patience to and determination to persist with the seemingly small and insignificant actions, even though the results may not be visible in the short term.

You will realize that when it comes to success, the little things are the big things.

You will learn that even if success has eluded you in the past, by learning and applying the slight edge principles you can be successful at anything.

Conclusion

As I have proven with my fitness goal, using the slight edge principles can lead to you achieving extraordinary results. So take the first small step and invest in your knowledge by learning for yourself what the slight edge really is. Get a copy for yourself and get the slight edge to success.

  1. I think i heard of the slight edge long ago, then i couldn’t understand it very well so i’m glad i came across this post.
    We are starting a new year and i think more people should try this with their resolutions.
    I sure will with some goals i have in mind, i believe is an effective way to reach your goals without feeling overwhelmed and giving up.

    • Hi Alert. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on this post. I’m actually implementing the slight edge principle with my wife and children as we begin the new year. As part of our weekly family gathering I’ve asked each family member to think of the simple daily actions that we need to take in order to accomplish our goals for the year both as individuals and as a family. Then we need to create a system that will assist us to hold each other accountable for doing those simple daily actions.

It is all the baby steps along the way that make the difference.
